Work Title (display):
Communing with (Non) Nature
Image Title:
detail side view
Work Description:
This sculptural assembly is a deconstructed Natural History Museum diorama. This installation serves as an effort to pull back the layers of illusion and show the fabrication of nature by way of the diorama. Often these dioramas paint nature, or the natural, as sublime or revered when in fact they are natural simulations built from a non-natural perspective. / There is a conflict within dioramas as their purpose is to preserve and simulate a natural space while its construction deconstructs the natural-ness of the scene and in turn fabricates a non-natural space. Parts of the natural space is destroyed, criticized and turned into the ideal of what it was, preserving not what it was but what it should be. / Dioramas of taxidermied animals suspended in time in their “natural habitat” have always caught my attention. Dioramas preserve a “natural” moment in time without the active danger one experiences within real nature. This allows the viewer to get close enough to a grizzly bear to count its teeth without getting mauled...allowing the viewer to passively experience nature and acquire a false sense of communion with the natural. / By pulling back the frame of the wall and glass and allowing the observer to be involved with the space, I expose the fabricated nature of the scene while also exposing its fragmentation, revealing the conflict of construction and the preservation of such a non-natural nature.
