Work Description:
Artist Statement: This work makes the theoretical physical. The shape of the sculptures is determined by a family of mathematical formulas that vary by two parameters. In my work, mathematical rules are translated into physical objects that allow the viewer to perceive and experience math and space physically, in relation to body. For example, the smallest of the three sculptures is open on both ends and becomes a portal just big enough to suggest the viewer could enter the abstract space these forms inhabit. // Color demonstrates and amplifies the mathematical and material origin of the forms. The placement of each color on the sculpture is mathematically determined by the formulas. The paint in plastic bags is the same material used to color the forms. The logic of the color grids provides a key to how a flat, two-dimensional plane can be mapped onto a three-dimensional form. By making work rooted in an abstract space, I explore the push and pull between understanding explicitly how something exists, and the mysterious, wondrous and playful power these forms hold.
