Work Title (display):
The Quiet Stir of Circumstance
Work Title (variant):
installation view
Work Description:
Artist statement: My installation centers on the table as a site of making, presentation and consumption. Food is prepared, plated, served, and consumed. Objects change hands, vases are filled and emptied. What is left over from this transitory site, where materials change from one state to another, is the subject of my inquiry. // My installation uses narratives associated with the genre of still life. Incorporating familiar objects, I ask: What goes unnoticed in the making of everyday moments? By creating -- a plate of food permanently fixed in ceramic that can no longer be consumed through touch or taste -- I play with notions of containment and interiority. Tools double as culinary objects of the table and instruments of making used within my practice. // Through the work of my hands, I attend to these objects and reimagine them as something fixed in time, a constant and visible memory of their original. In doing so, I bring attention to my belief that the things we are closest to are often the things we know the least.
