Work Title (display):
Three Box Model for a Semi-Toxic Utopia: Diagram of installation
Image Title:
full view
Work Description:
Available in gallery as handouts. // Artist statement: The horizon feels warm, but I have yet to tell if it is from the heat from a spreading forest fire or the hot smell of coffee on your breath. // Three Box Model for a Semi-Toxic Utopia ponders about an ecological future where one must find joy, kinship, and wonder amidst environmental damage. Two artist books are the heart of the installation, each searching through my past memories for a utopian image about the future. Surrounding the books are environmental simulation chambers, reminiscent of laboratory spaces. In each chamber, a pumping system scents the air with utopian affect laced with small doses of smells of ecological damage. The smell of coffee holds traces of sulfur. In honeysuckle nectar, one can find particles of forest fire smoke. Periodically, the scent subsides and fans pull air from the chamber through air ducts and into the HVAC system of the museum. The scents of the chamber, the off gassing from the plastic walls, and the humidity on your breath: everything moves through the museum ducts and eventually into the atmosphere. If the future is downwind, what hope do we launch into that moving air, forever blowing towards the horizon?
