Work Description:
Artist statement: In Oklahoma, where I grew up, my family lived in a house that sat atop a quarter mile long hill surrounded by 80 acres of wilderness. While I lived there, I encountered a variety of flora and fauna in my day to day existence that were always prevalent in and surrounding that house and now reside in my mind. These natural elements serve as personal symbols in my work as I navigate through my mental health stemming from my experiences in this house. // Throughout my life, I have always been an isolated person who would tend to live inside of my own head and would internalize almost everything. My mental health struggles have been something that has been invalidated by those closest to me and learning to cope alone has been challenging for me. // Stemming from my biggest fear that I’ve had since I was very young, death, my work often incorporates my thoughts associated with this fear and combines it with elements from my family life as well as experiences of my youth. With an interest in the supernatural, I also incorporate my fear of death with the stories told to me by my grandmother and father that have influenced me. Utilizing the flora and fauna I was surrounded by at the home I last lived in in Oklahoma, while also mimicking the aforementioned aspects of storytelling, my work tends to spin a narrative with many familial influences coming together to culminate into one piece; this often makes my pieces rich with personal memories and stories taken from my life. // As I navigate through my past experiences, my work provides a sense of catharsis for me. In my work, I investigate my relationships with my past that have been closely and negatively intertwined with my mental health. Using the surrounding natural wildlife juxtaposed with my navigation through my mental health I reflect on the sense of trauma I have felt not only in that house but throughout my childhood as I begin to finally express what I’ve kept bottled up inside.
