Work Description:
Thesis abstract: The People, the Diné/Navajo have a central philosophy/belief which is at the heart of the culture. It is a philosophy manifest not only in ceremony and ritual but, encompasses a way of living. The philosophy of Hózhq́ has often been simplistically described, "to walk in beauty." The Diné ideal of Hózhq́ embodies an almost indescribable spirit of living, a way of being. Art is a means through which I aspire to the Diné/Navajo ideals of Hózhq́, reaffirming who I am as a Diné, as a woman and as an artist. // My name is Ahéézhnibaa'. I belong to the Hashk 'qqhadzohi (maternal-Yucca Fruit Clan) and born for Tsenjikin{ (paternal - Cliff Dwellers clan). I am a Diné/Navajo woman and an artist. As a Native American woman living in mainstream America I feel privileged to have access to an indigenous culture. My Diné origins are the source from which I gather personal and artistic sustenance and stimulation. Diné culture is rich in tradition and stories. Areas of interest include: the Diné language, womanhood, matrilineal clan systems and Diné Bikeya (Navajo homeland between the four sacred mountains). The Diné Bahane' (Navajo creation story), tradition, family/clan and specific sites such as Dook'o 'osliid (western sacred mountain) and my mother's garden where my umbilical cord is buried, are sources of inspiration. Significant personal experiences of the past five years that have been influential include: my return to Diné Bikeyah; restored ties to Diné culture and tradition; my traditional Diné wedding ceremony; and the birth of my first child. There is an inseparable connection between my art and the influences of my culture. My art is a personal narrative. The experience of being who I am in relation to my tribal heritage is reflected in my art. My People, culture, and the land where I am from are integral to who I am and the art I create.
