Artist statement: Color Advisory Service interprets the work of two color vision specialists -- research scientist Celeste McCollough and Natalie Kalmus, executive head of Technicolor Corporation’s Color Control Department and author of their ruling principles, the 1935 article titled Color Consciousness. This near-manifesto – excerpted in both sound and text inside the installation’s induction chamber – outlined the aesthetic regulations that the Color Control Department imposed upon contractually bound studios, detailing the appropriate compositional role and meaning that Kalmus assigned to each color. // The projected text inside the induction chamber thoroughly explains Technicolor’s dogmatic ideology in Kalmus’s own words, but also serves a more covert function: the horizontal and vertical lines of text form grid-like patterns that operate similarly to the horizontal and vertical gratings used to induce a visual phenomenon called the McCollough Effect, named for it’s discoverer Celeste McCollough. After a brief (10-minute) period with the adaptation images, an observer’s vision gains the latent ability to generate mild yet long-lasting (up to 30 hours) after-effects in the form of green and magenta phantom colors projected onto neutral (B&W) lines of the same orientation and spatial frequency as the adaptation images. // The three 16mm film loops projected outside the induction chamber reverse and replicate the groundbreaking but obsolete historical photographic process colloquially known as “three-strip Technicolor”. The films deconstruct and rebuild color from replicas of the red, green, and blue rooms of the White House – optically isolating and removing the respective R, G, or B wall colors and replacing them with neutralized McCollough-inducing adaptation images.
