Ethics of Passivity: Femininity

Work Description:
Artist statement: This piece stems from an ongoing process, relating to my identity as a woman with a congenital heart defect and a traumatic brain injury. I was misdiagnosed as a candidate for open heart surgery twice. This prompted me to draw my own stitches on my chest in an effort to understand and accept the surgical procedures I would undergo as well as my inability to control what happens to my body. // Although I will still need this surgery in the future, recreating these stitches has served as an act of empowerment, transforming my passive, feminine role into an active one. I have continued to draw these stitches on myself and others, examining the feminine body as a whole. The resulting markings resemble sewing patterns and expand the conversation to how the feminine body is commonly portrayed as a passive object, defined by someone else’s standards. These standards also teach females that their bodies are projects requiring alterations. // Following these experiences, I contemplated the consequences of living with a feminine, passive body. I noticed how control is asserted through practices associated with the feminine body, extending to an association between morality and sexuality. This relationship suggests that a woman’s worth lies in her body, rather than her personal values and choices. The empty gown further reflects the passivity of the feminine body, floating in space as an object without a subject.
