Work Description:
Artist statement: The human brain is constantly taking in and processing sensory information. However, some individuals, including myself, experience two sensations at once. This phenomenon is called synesthesia, a neurological condition that causes the brain to process data in the form of multiple senses at once. For example, when I taste something sour, I associate the flavor with a particular shade of blue. Further, I experience strong associations between color, music, and smell. // This body of work consists of abstract paintings that express the sensory connections I experience between sound, smell, taste, and vision. Two of the paintings illustrate musical pieces and the other two interpret a specific taste and smell. By manipulating paint to express these associations, I aim to give visual birth to images that only exist in my minds’ eye. // Through this series of paintings, I intend to stimulate an appreciation of the incredible corporeal abilities that we have as living beings. From one individual to another, our perception of the world is never exactly the same. In its many varieties, synesthesia highlights the profound differences in how individuals experience the world. It reminds us that each brain uniquely filters what it perceives, making the world thoroughly subjective.
