Work Description:
Artist statement: Tying traditional soft crafts and communal connection are at the core of my work. I look closely at social behaviors to gain a greater understanding of what it means to be a contemporary American. The body-specific, social and emotional phenomena I encounter become the strings which tie my work. Specifically, I look at and interpret interpersonal communication, relationships, and the physical expression of emotion. // My work engages with and depends upon people. Using furniture, and other familiar forms, I create environments and situations in which viewers become participant-collaborators. My work departs from traditional fine-art object making and instead allows for and encourages interpersonal connection. These environments become a space for us to slow down and extend our understanding for one another into our surroundings. // My recent work creates a shared reverence between strangers—independent of emotional ties or visual similarity. Through letter writing and reflective sitting, I encourage myself and others to value our shared humanity: a process I call cognitive interaction. This body of work is categorically social practice, and yet depends heavily on formal and material aspects to successfully shape a space. The design of space-through-object is critical in forming my desired interaction, and yet the true material of the work remains ephemeral and intangible.
