Work Description:
Artist Statement: My work here is a continued engagement with the activism and memory of Los Seis de Boulder: Una Jaakola, Neva Romero, Reyes Martínez, Florencio Granado, Heriberto Téran and Francisco Dougherty. These six activists of the Chicanx Student Movement were killed in May 1974 in two separate car bombs, two days apart—one at Chautauqua Park, and one at 28 th and Canyon Boulevard—during a protest and occupation of Temporary Building 1 on campus. The killings were never adequately investigated, and the university has yet to reckon with this traumatic history. // In spring 2019, I led a community process to plan and create a sculpture commemorating the lives and activism of these students. It was installed in front of Temporary Building 1 in July and dedicated September 6. It contains six portraits composed of mosaic tiles made and pieced together by many hands, documented in El Diario and in the video Marking Space for Los Seis de Boulder. // My sculptures dredge the histories and materials of this university and campus to make meaning around what we neglect to keep, record and remember. I’ve created portraits of Los Seis, informed by the stories told by those who know and love them, and by my understanding of those stories: They are biographical and autobiographical, portrait and self-portrait, of things I know and don’t. My materials come from archives (absent, ancestral, familial, institutional and imagined), things combed from the waste of this school and things I dragged here from past homes.
