Work Description:
Thesis abstract: My current work is based on a combination of two basic ideas. The first is the idea of the house as metaphor for the body. An idea that is commonly found in western Christianity and is also the basis of French Philosopher and Phenomonologist Gaston Bachelards book, "The Poetics of Space". I have used the above quote from his book because it is a brief, concise description of the importance and significance of the house. Bachelard addresses this metaphor from the point of view of a phenomonologist and poet. He uses the topographic structure of the house as a poetic metaphor in relation to the human mind and spirit. His use of the structure of a house and its division of space is related to the mind and where one goes in their memories, dreams and imagination. Although we share the same appreciation of the importance of the house in relation to one's personal history and aspirations, I've taken a different direction in my interpretation of the metaphor. My analogy is based on a more physical interpretation which incorporates historic traditions of decoration, natural deterioration and the element of individuality or uniqueness characteristic of every structure, even those built from the same blueprint. // It is with these ideas in mind that I create my work. Some of the work is autobiographical, some biographical and some is simply based on situations that I have observed in the past or have been told about through second or third hand experiences. All of the work deals with actual realities. In some cases the person is not available to portray themselves in the work so I take the liberty of using myself or another model as an actor. This is one of several reasons for not portraying the person's identity by obscuring the face. It allows the viewer to identify with the experience, not the person.
