Work Description:
Thesis abstract: I look to the past to help my understanding of the present. I do this in part by using vintage clothing in the work. The clothing has integrity in the way it is constructed. The craftsmanship is superior. There is an obvious commitment to quality and labor, which is often lost in the mass produced products of today. The ideas of the nameless crafts-person and time consuming labor historically represent women. Women's work has often gone unrecognized. By using the actual clothing in the pieces, the past becomes undeniable. Each garment stands witness to its particular time in history, illustrating the ideals of that time. Our clothing is something we chose to represent ourselves to others. It is one from of freedom allowed to both sexes. The fact that it is a choice, unlike gender or skin color, makes clothing unique in its representation. It says something about how we see ourselves and what we want others to see in us. // Art can be used as a tool for positive change. Women's work no longer has to stay in the home and go unrecognized. It can become a vehicle for discussion and understanding. Putting undergarments on display does not have to be pornographic. It can be the first step in challenging cultural taboos about what should be private and what should be public. When we learn to question all that we have blindly accepted then we may begin to change. When we realize where stereotypes come from and how often they are incorrect we will see how useless they truly are. When we finally do as we say, then we win. Too often people get defensive when someone complains. We are all afraid that the finger will point to us. The truth of the matter is that sometimes the finger is going to point at you and other times you are going to be pointing it at someone else. Learning to take responsibility for one's own actions is harder when one acts alone. Without the group to support you, you stand to lose a lot. If enough people act alone then maybe others will stand with them. This is the beginning of my own stand.
