Work Description:
Thesis abstract: The Eden Project is a series of narrative ceramic wall plates which illustrate both the stories of Eve tasting from the fruit in the Garden of Eden and the story of my choice to return to school to study ceramics. The series addresses the topic of a woman's choice. Like a palimpsest, "parchment previously written upon that bears traces of the erased texts,"1 The Eden Project juxtaposes old and new symbols and words. // In The Eden Project, I am exploring the ability of the ceramic medium to narrate a multifaceted story. Through the combination of and contrast between age-old icons from the myth of the Garden of Eden with more contemporary icons from my life, the ceramic work presents a layering of information. It is through this palimpsest that the viewer of the Eden Project examines the contemporary relevance of ancient myths and symbols. // The Eden Project combines Eve's story with my own personal decision to leave the world of advertising to pursue an education and career in ceramics. I empathize with Eve's curiosity in that we both made a choice to taste from the tree of knowledge.
