Work Title (display):
Fraktured Homeland
Image Title:
detail of sculpture
Work Description:
Artist statement: Fraktured Homeland is a tribute to the site of the fraktur as a source of identity. In this installation, the regional history of my childhood is materially embedded through the appliquéd nature of the built fraktur forms and through the use of a type of clay similar to what is found under the earth in eastern Pennsylvania. / Frakturs were originally hand-drawn writing exercises rooted in the tradition of the medieval illustrated manuscript. They became an independently flourishing artistic tradition in the generations following the emigration of the “Pennsylvania Dutch” to the rolling hills of the Susquehanna Valley. / Frakturs are divided into categories with specific functions: house blessings, birth certificates, and family trees. This installation is based on the “reward of merit” frakturs given from a teacher to a student as a token of a job well done. In many frakturs, forms are created through repeated shapes that blur the boundaries between plant, animal, and architecture. / In Fraktured Homeland I seek to breathe volume into the space of the fraktur and piece together what is broke, what is inherited, and what is new.
