Work Description:
Artist Statement: My work examines domestic spaces as places of comfort, control, and confinement. When people find order and stability, they often anchor themselves to it, even when their comfort is not that comfortable. Routine gives the illusion of control, but as a stance of avoidance, it leads to complacency. My paintings depict silent, mundane moments that are romanticized yet burdened. The domestic sphere has and does dominate cultural perception of female identity. If the home is the sphere of rest and refuge from the world, then women are the caretakers of domestic happiness. The woman in my paintings warily accepts the subtle domination of society’s expectations, taking on the house’s attributes of enclosure and isolation. Through the act of painting, I meditate on the nuances of my internal monologue and conditioned behavior.
