Work Description:
Artist Statement: "The expression that there is nothing to express, nothing with which to express, nothing from which to express, no power to express, no desire to express, together with the obligation to express." - Samuel Beckett The modes of expression available to us allow for the potential to communicate with others, but the efficacy of these trials is often trivial, as much can be lost in translation. Working in visual media puts us into direct contact with our phenomenological experiences, as we must become conscious of the crisis of working to represent moments or ideas honestly and clearly. The projected image is a mode of representation, which allows us to view something animate, and very similarly to the ways in which, we view the world naturally. I am interested in freeing both the viewer and the images from their expected roles in order to encourage a new kind of cinematic captivation through immersion, and the blurring of screen space and viewer space. Utilizing a combination of objects and projections, this piece seeks to activate the viewer's self-awareness through physical engagement with animated objects, as an attempt to contend with problems of representation. I am interested in investigating the representational limitations of objectness and moving images by using images to re-insert auras back into objects and objects to re-insert auras back into images.//This work exists as a merger between physical and projected space. It was crated using 3 projectors, which at any given time projected between 7 and 15 projections collectively.
