Work Description:
Artist's statement: The main topic of my thesis work is on the everyday documentation of my surroundings and the homeless community where I live in the Westside of Denver. In preparation for this thesis project, I walked around and communicated with the homeless people of my neighborhood, made sketches and took photos with my IPhone and 35mm camera references, and created large-scale drawings on the subject. The size and scale of my work is also a commentary on awareness of the homeless population. The scale of the drawings is meant to be to be in your face, an issue that cannot be ignored. It's an opportunity for people to look more closely at those they deem invisible and recognize the humanity in them. The large drawings are of many different people and are drawn on recycled paper that I found in a dumpster behind my apartment were I live. All of the people that I drew, met and spoke to either on the initial day that I took a photo or on another day when they were awake and aware, I asked for their permission to use their picture for this project. I got to know and learn a little about their lives and what kind of stories they had to tell. I also chose sound to add to accompany my drawings. I recorded sounds of the loud and quiet urban settings of Downtown Denver -- sounds of cars humming across pavement; loud sirens and horns; people talking, yelling and screaming; footsteps of people walking; and dogs barking. I recorded over 21 hours of cityscape sounds. A couple of the homeless people that I used for my drawings were people that I knew and know personally. I see them on a regular basis in the alleys or walking down the street. Many people see the homeless as a dark and grotesque side of our society. In this presentation of my thesis work, I plan to raise awareness and to keep our attention on the things that we most want to turn away from, like the homeless.
