Work Description:
The subterranean pits containing Qin Shihuangdi's terra cotta army were discovered in March 1974, when farmers were digging a well in Lintong County, Shaanxi province. This site, now called Bingmayong, is about 35 km east of modern day Xi'an. Qin Shihuangdi, or the First August Emperor of Qin, reigned as emperor from 221 to 210 BCE. Workers began work on the tomb complex at the beginning of his reign. His tomb, a large mound located within a walled compound 1,225 m away from the pits, has not been excavated. The pits were opened to the public on October 1, 1979. The life-sized and painted pottery sculptures were made from local clay and have an average height of 1.8 m. Many originally held weapons, which were apparently looted during early Han. Pit One contains the main army in battle formation with an estimated total of 6,000 figures of warriors and horses, most still unexcavated. None of the terra cotta sculptures have been found intact, due to the burning and collapse of the roof that originally housed them. They have all been reconstructed in the late twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

Refers to the style and period associated with the Qin dynasty, the first imperial Chinese dynasty, dating from 221-206 BCE. It was during this time that the Great Wall was constructed. Few art objects can be definitely attributed to this period, the best known being life-size pottery soldiers and horses found at the tomb of King Zheng in Lintong. (AAT)
