Work Description:
Huaqing Hot Springs lies 35 km east of Xi'an. It is purported that the springs were imperial bathing pools long before Tang, but their strongest associations are with Tang emperors and their concubines, such as Emperor Xuanzong and his favorite concubine, Yang Guifei. Emperor Xuanzong is credited with the reconstruction of the springs and surrounding buildings, and he supposedly renamed the site Huaqing in 747 CE. No buildings survive intact from Tang, however. Most were actually constructed in the mid- to late- twentieth century in the style of Tang.
