Work Description:
The caves and statues at Longmen were sculpted out of the rock from as early as Northern Wei, when the capital was moved from Datong, Shanxi Province to Luoyang, Henan in 493-4 CE. At this time, Emperor Xiaowen commissioned Buddhist caves like those at Yungang. Construction continued until 755, the year of the rebellion of An Lushan against the Tang dynasty (618-907).
