Work Creator notes (display):
Daughter of (1) Jan Sanders van Hemessen. Both Vasari and Guicciardini mention her, along with the illuminators Levina Teerlinc, Susanna Horenbout and others, as a prominent Netherlandish woman painter. According to van Beverwyck, she studied painting under her father. She acknowledged filial respect by signing an aristocratic Portrait of a Man (London, N.G.): Catharina filia Ioannes de Hemessen Pingebat 1552. The suggestion that Catharina painted background scenes for some of her father's pictures (Bergmans) is unacceptable on both stylistic and chronological grounds. Catharina was 20 years old when she executed her Self-portrait (1548; Basle, Kstmus.), which shows her painting at an easel, dressed in primly elegant attire. In a contemporary portrait of a Young Woman Playing the Virginal (Cologne, Wallraf-Richartz-Mus.), she painted a young woman of similar appearance to herself (perhaps her elder sister Christina). In 1554 Catharina married Chrétien de Morien (or Marin), an organist at Antwerp Cathedral. The talented couple were admired by Mary of Hungary, sister of Emperor Charles V, and in September 1556 they left for Spain in Mary of Hungary's entourage. According to Guicciardini, on her death in 1558 Mary of Hungary 'left them provision for their entire lives'. Jan van Hemessen's late painting A Musician and his Muse (The Hague, Mauritshuis) may refer to his daughter's marriage. No paintings by Catharina have survived dated after 1552, and her artistic career was apparently eclipsed by her husband's. Eight small portraits and two religious pictures bearing her signature have survived, dating between 1548 and 1552. In contrast to her father's monumental, highly mannered style, Catharina van Hemessen painted fairly small panels in a restrained, tasteful idiom. In several of her portraits she adopted the severe two-thirds-length format preferred by Anthonis Mor, free master at Antwerp in 1547. While noticeably flat and attenuated, Catharina's delicate figures possess a graceful charm. She had a sensitive feeling for stylish costumes and accessories. Her religious work, for example Christ Carrying the Cross (Mons, priv. col., see Tufts, 1974, fig. 23), was less successful. Her Infant Christ and St John the Baptist Playing with a Lamb (sold Vienna, 1937, see Wallen, 1983, fig. 130) is probably a partial copy of a lost Holy Family by Jan Sanders van Hemessen of 1547.
