Work Description:
Triple terrace, open-air altar, located at southern end of complex. The three white marble terraces represent heaven at the top, earth in the middle, and man at the base. The terrace sizes are related by multiples of the number three, representing heaven, earth, man; and nine, symbol of the sky and the emperor. The altar was first built in this spot by the Yongzheng emperor, Shizong, in 1530. It was rebuilt and enlarged between 1749 and 1752, during the reign of the Qianlong emperor, Gaozong (r. 1736-1795).
