In Changping County, Beijing Municipality. Thirteen Ming emperors buried at Shisanling from 1368-1644. Total area of site is 40 sq. km area. Emperor Yongle (r. 1403-1424) was buried in the Changling tomb, the largest and most famous tomb of the thirteen. Changling means ''imperial mausoleum of long-lastingness.'' The spirit tower, a characteristic feature of Ming tomb complexes, was built on a square platform. While building of the tomb began between 1409 and 1413, it continued after Yongle's death in 1424 until 1427. The last monuments for the spirit path leading to the tomb (and other Ming imperial tombs built around it) were not completed until the sixteenth century. The Changling tomb complex was restored in the early 1950s.
