Work Creator notes (display):
American painter. Sage was born at Albany, NY, and self-taught as a painter. She lived in Italy 190014 and 191937 and in the latter period was heavily influenced by the work of de Chirico. In 1937 she moved to Paris where she associated with the Surrealists, exhibiting with them at the Salon des Surindépendants in 1938. In 1940 she returned to the USA with Yves Tanguy, whom she married. She participated in the International Surrealist Exhibition, New York, in 1942 and had a successful career, culminating in a retrospective exhibition at the Catherine Viviano Gallery, New York, in 1960. Her American work is free of Chirico's influence and has more in common with Tanguy, although less biomorphic. Her best-known paintings frequently show upright jagged shapes, reminiscent of half-furled sails, of ambiguous material and construction, set against smoothly painted backgrounds of imaginary desert landscapes or the sea. Sometimes, as in Tomorrow is Never (1955; New York, Met. Mus.), she incorporates draperies from which ghostly faces and figures emerge. http://www.groveart
