Pisanello must have seen the statue The River Tigris (second century CE, marble, Rome, Capitoline Museums) on a visit to Rome where it remained, on the Quirinal Hill near the Horse Tamers, throughout the Middle Ages. Antonio Pisano, known as Pisanello, was one of the most popular artists of his time. He was born in Pisa or Verona (Italy); his name refers to a Pisan origin. Although he identified himself as a painter in his signatures, he trained as a goldsmith and was an excellent draftsman. He worked at the courts of Mantua, Ferrara, Pavia, Milan, and Naples and was especially beloved by the Gonzaga and Este families. Comment on works: Mythology (ULAN)
