Work Creator notes (display):
Italian painter, born in Cortona. In 1901 he moved to Rome, where he met Balla, who gave him lessons in Divisionism (see Neo-Impressionism), and Boccioni. He moved to Paris in 1906, becoming friendly with such figures as Picasso, Apollinaire, and Max Jacob (18761944). While living in Paris, he remained in close contact with his Italian associates, joining the Futurist movement in 1910. Although much of his Futurist work is still influenced by Divisionism, from c.1912 his work showed a strong awareness of Cubism, whose innovations he recommended to his fellow Futurists. Despite his debt to the figurative style of the Cubists, some of his work at this time is completely abstract, with patches of pure colour arranged into dynamic rhythmic patterns. From 1915 he devoted himself to studies of proportion in an attempt to arrive at a more objective and classical art, which would nonetheless take account of modern artistic developments. He also concentrated on more traditional subjects, producing in 1922 a series of frescoes at the Palazzo Monteguofoni in Tuscany, which represent scenes from the commedia dell'arte. During the 1920s and 1930s he also executed commissions for religious murals and mosaics in Switzerland. His post-war work, however, includes some paintings that are hard to distinguish from those of the Futurist period. http://www.groveart
