Work Creator notes (display):
Netherlandish painter, active in Bruges from 1444, and the leading painter there after the death of Jan van Eyck. He follows closely the style of his contemporaries, particularly van Eyck, whose works he may have copied or completed. Several works are signed and dated. His intimate Portrait of a Man (London, NG) is detailed with microscopic precision and the sitter is, unusually, placed by an open window overlooking a landscape. A portrait of a Carthusian (1446; New York, Met. Mus.) is a dramatically lit close-up of a figure whose gaze engages directly with the spectator; the intervening space is bridged, in the manner of van Eyck, by a trompe l'œil fly placed on an illusionistic parapet. Petrus Christus' skilled depiction of familiar settings and interiors is seen in the Virgin and Child in an Interior (Kansas City, Mo., Nelson Atkins Mus. of Art), which recalls van Eyck's Arnolfini Portrait (London, NG) while employing deep perspectival recession and airy spaciousness. His debt to Rogier van der Weyden is evident from his Lamentation (Brussels, Mus. Royaux). Here he takes over motifs from Rogier's emotional and tightly constructed Descent from the Cross in the Prado, Madrid, but produces a composition which is restrained, even stiff, but with beautifully observed details, and a panoramic, distantly receding landscape. Smith, Marilyn. "Christus, Petrus." The Oxford Companion to Western Art. Ed. Hugh Brigstocke. Oxford Art Online. 27 Oct. 2008 .
