Work Creator notes (display):
His style and technique were learned from David but his subject matter and emotional treatment allied him with the Romantics. He was interested in unusual color effects and favored literary themes, but was also renowned for his paintings glorifying Napoleon. Girodet was named 'de Roussy' or 'de Roucy' after a forest near his family home, Chateau du Verger, Montargis. He took the name Trioson in 1806, when he was adopted by Dr. Benoit-Francois Trioson, who was his tutor, guardian and probably his natural father. (ULAN)
