Work Description:
The portraits of Robert Shewell Jr. and his wife, the farmer Sarah or Mary Boyer are thought to have been painted in Charleston. Work Creator notes (display):
American painter. He was educated at the Academy of Philadelphia (17518), from which he withdrew to study briefly with John Wollaston. Benbridge's first portraits, of his mother, stepbrother, half-sister and a large family group (all priv. cols, see 1971 exh. cat., pp. 357), show Wollaston's influence in composition and colour. Benbridge's paintings of Achilles among the Daughters of Lycomedes and the Three Graces (DE, priv. cols, see 1971 exh. cat., pp. 1516) are based on European prints after Rubens. In 1765 Benbridge travelled to Rome, where he shared rooms with the sculptor Christopher Hewetson. While in Rome in 1768, he accepted a commission from James Boswell to go to Corsica to paint the portrait of General Pascal Paoli (San Francisco, CA, F.A. Museums), which was well received when shown in London at the Free Society of Artists exhibition in May 1769. Benbridge was in London by December 1769, lodging in Panton Square and taking his meals with Benjamin West, to whose wife he was related. Benbridge's portraits of Benjamin Franklin (untraced) and the Rev. Thomas Coombe (ex-James Abernathy, Christ Church, PA, 1816) were shown at the Royal Academy in 1770. Benbridge was back in Philadelphia by 14 October 1770 and married Esther (Hetty) Sage, a painter of miniatures. In 1772 they settled in Charleston, SC, of which he wrote 'the only thing attended to is dress and disapation [sic]'. Most of Benbridge's surviving paintings are portraits and miniatures of South Carolinians; perhaps the finest is of Charles Cotesworth Pinckney (Washington, DC, N.P.G.). Although he overpainted the uniform when Pinckney threw in his lot with the Revolutionaries, the picture displays Benbridge's virtuosity with glazes and colour. When Charleston fell to the British (12 May 1780), Benbridge, also a Revolutionary, was taken prisoner and sent to St Augustine, FL, where he painted the prison governor Benjamin Loring (MI, Mr and Mrs S. P. Sax priv. col., see 1971 exh. cat., p. 42). Benbridge was released in Philadelphia in 1782 and remained there until his return to Charleston in 1784. The most charming of his portraits 'in-the-small' (full-lengths painted on a small scale), the Enoch Edwards Family (c. 1783; Philadelphia, PA, Mus. A.), includes his self-portrait. His portrait of the mother of Washington Allston, Rachel Moore Allston Flagg (c. 1784; Winston-Salem, NC, Mus. Early S. Dec. A.), suggests that Benbridge may have had an indirect influence on Allston. On 1 May 1788 Benbridge represented the limners of Charleston in a parade celebrating the adoption of the Federal Constitution of the United States, and he was listed in the city directory for 1790. In 1801 the portrait painter Thomas Sully received some instruction from Benbridge in Norfolk, VA. Here Benbridge painted his 'in-the-small' family group Mr and Mrs Francis Stubbs Taylor and Children (Winston-Salem, NC, Mus. Early S. Dec. A.). He probably made his home with his son Henry who was in Norfolk until 1806. The record of Benbridge's burial gives his age as 70. (Grove Art Online Accessed 2006-07-25)
