Work Creator notes (display):
German painter, active in the USA. He trained at the Kunstakademie in Dresden under Julius Hübner and Ludwig Richter, followed by two years at the Düsseldorf Akademie. He received gold and silver medals from the Dresden Gallery in 1851. During the 1860s his paintings were exhibited in Boston, New York and San Francisco, as well as in Europe. He met a number of American artists in Düsseldorf, including William Keith, who was there during most of 1870. When Keith and his wife Elizabeth, also a painter, returned to the USA, they encouraged Hahn to join them. Hahn visited them in Maine in the autumn of 1871, and the three artists set up a studio together in the Lawrence Building in Boston for the 18712 season. Hahn then travelled with Keith by train to San Francisco, and by August they had separate studios in the Mercantile Library Building there. Hahn quickly established himself as a California painter with complex urban genre scenes, such as Market Scene, Sansome Street, San Francisco (1872; Sacramento, CA, Crocker A. Mus.) and Sacramento Railroad Station (1874; San Francisco, CA, F.A. Museums). He also painted rural scenes around the state, which almost always included animals, especially white horses. Some of his paintings feature children; others draw on California themes, such as grizzly bear hunting and MexicanAmerican cattle ranching. When the San Francisco art market took a major downturn in 1878, Hahn moved to New York, where he exhibited at the National Academy of Design and the Brooklyn Art Association. His Union Square, New York City (1878; Yonkers, NY, Hudson River Mus.) dates from the year of his move. He returned to San Francisco in late 1879 and exhibited on both coasts in 1880 and 1881. In 1882 he married Adelaide Rising, and they embarked on an extended stay in Europe, settling first in London and relocating to Dresden in 1885. Although they intended to return to California, Hahn became ill and died in Dresden. Despite spending little more than a decade in the USA and splitting his time between the coasts, he had established himself as one of the foremost late 19th-century practitioners of genre painting in America.
