Work Creator notes (display):
French painter. She spent her childhood at the Gobelins, where her father was a goldsmith. Though she thus belonged to artistic circles, when received (reçue) by the Académie Royale in 1770, on presentation of the still-lifes Attributes of Painting and Musical Instruments (both Paris, Louvre), she was known to have neither a teacher nor an official patron. She exhibited for the first time at the Salon the following year and achieved a success that never deserted her. She showed still-lifes (which were compared to those of Jean-Siméon Chardin), imitation low reliefs and genre scenes, the last reminiscent of those by Jean-Baptiste Greuze. From 1775 onwards her flower paintings attracted greatest attention: many of these remain in private collections (see Roland Michel), but among others on public view are those in Nancy (Mus. B.-A.) and New York (Met.). She also drew, painted miniatures (see Roland Michel, nos 36186) and executed life-size portraits. Her portraits were admired by her contemporaries, as is shown by the commissions she received for those of Louis XVI's aunt Mme Sophie and of Queen Marie-Antoinette (both 1780). Among her surviving portraits is that of a Lady Writing, and her Daughter (1775; Barnard Castle, Bowes Mus.). One of her series of portraits of Vestals belonged to Marie-Antoinette, who obtained lodgings for her in the Louvre and in 1781 signed her contract of marriage with the lawyer Jean-Pierre-Sylvestre Coster. However, the appearance of the portrait painters Adelaïde Labille-Guiard and Elisabeth Vigée-Lebrun led to comparisons unfavourable to Vallayer-Coster, who then devoted herself to the genre in which her superiority was recognized. In her last Salon in 1817 she showed a large still-life, Vase, Lobster, Fruit and Game (Paris, Louvre), which belonged to Louis XVIII. Vallayer-Coster had a very personal way of grouping flowers, fruit, animal trophies, plate and domestic objects in a perfectly organized space over which the chromatic subtleties of her palette could play. With particular arrangements of selected forms such as flowers and fruit she built up a repertory, which, over the years, though hardly changing, became increasingly subtle. This unsentimental art sometimes achieved, in her assemblages of flags and drums, corals and shells, a strength unrivalled by any of the painters of her generation.
