Work Creator notes (display):
American painter. Born in Florence, he trained in Paris, under Carolus-Duran (18381917) who introduced him to direct painting on the canvas, plein air painting, and the art of Velázquez, which remained influential. An outstanding pupil, he painted Carolus-Duran in 1879 (Williamstown, Mass., Art Inst.) and soon established a portrait practice. In 1884 his portrait of Mme Gautreau (New York, Met. Mus.) was vilified and from 1885 he worked and lived primarily in England. In the late 1880s he was influenced by his friend Monet towards Impressionism but by the 1890s had established a highly successful formula for society portraits. These works, with bravura brush strokes influenced by Hals, tonality taken from Velázquez, and 18th-century poses, lack the characterization of earlier portraits like Vernon Lee (1881; London, Tate) and he was criticized for superficiality. However, he could still invest his sitters with considerable presence, as in Lord Ribblesdale (1902; London, Tate), the epitome of aristocratic hauteur. After 1906 he devoted much of his time to drawings and sparkling landscape sketches. In 1918 he worked as a war artist and from 1890 until c.1925 he painted murals for Boston Library and Museum.
