English family of sculptors. Dinos (b London, 19 Jan 1962) studied at Ravensbourne College of Art (197981) and in London at the Royal College of Art (198890). His brother Jake (b Cheltenham, 3 Nov 1966) studied at North East London Polytechnic (19858) and at the Royal College of Art during the same years as Dinos. The Chapman brothers attained swift notoriety on the London art scene after their first solo installation, We Are Artists, in which they printed a manifesto statement on a wall smeared with brown paint. Their first major collaboration was Disasters of War (1993; London, Tate), a collection of customized scale models reworking Goya's 181020 print portfolio of the same name. The presentation of innumerable horrific scenarios in a bland, miniaturized format is typical of the moral indifference central to their work. This nihilism became distilled in a series of grotesquely reassembled child mannequins presented in their exhibition Chapmanworld (London, ICA, 1996). For these the Chapmans took prefabricated child mannequins and grafted them together, adding genitalia in place of facial features and displaying them naked apart from wigs and Nike trainers. For the group exhibition Sensation (London, RA, 1997), the brothers created the installation Tragic Anatomies (fibreglass, resin, paint, smoke devices, 1997; London, Saatchi Gal.), showing various of these mutant figures cavorting in a leafy park environment. Although they have been often accused of courting controversy, they point to the willingness of an audience to collude with shocking material in a voyeuristic manner. They provide a historical and theoretical context for their outlandish, transgressive models, and often shock as much by articulate explanations as by their dark humour. (John-Paul Stonard.
