Work Creator notes (display):
Born on November 26th, 1959 in Lublin. Sculptor and author of installations. Studied in the department of Sculpture of the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk 1981-1986. She is associated with the Academy today, working as a teacher. She was widely recognised as an artist rather late - that is in 2000. A year later, she was awarded the Passport of "Polityka" weekly. The materials most often used by Katarzyna Jozefowicz are paper and cardboard, both of little durance and relatively delicate. With their use she creates subtle constructions of thousands of elements. Her works are extremely laborious, demanding several years of monotonous work, but all the activities involved are carried out by the artist herself. In the first half of the 1990s, she made two series: CITY (1990-1991) and HABITAT (1993-1996) - paper objects constructed of uncountable elements. CITY recreates the complicated structure of a metropolis, which does not develop horizontally, but accumulates vertically. HABITAT reminds of huge doll houses. It is a construction assembled of precise pieces of cardboard furniture of various size. More and more miniature elements fill the interiors of larger ones. On a micro scale, both works represent the molecular structure of human habitat. They are, however, uninhabited, rather reminding of a self-actively growing living organism whose growth cannot be enclosed within any exact rules. Human figures appear in CARPETS (2000), the work that brought the artist wide recognition. It consists of large horizontal surfaces created by combining thousands of faces and figures cut out of magazines and coloured newspapers. Celebrities mix with protagonists of tabloids and ordinary people, forming an anonymous crowd. CARPETS render an informative surfeit of the world as a global village, and especially, the excess of images surrounding contemporary man, who regardless of the crowds around him/her feels alone. In the GAMES (2002) series, Jozefowicz used colourful advertising leaflets. She covered with them hundreds of cubes and "scattered" them in the gallery space. That is why on every single presentation the installation takes on diverse shapes. Trivial information disseminated by omnipresent advertisements forms here colourful mounds of various shapes. In 2004 Jozefowicz made an installation consisting of hundreds of round plates made of wound up narrow paper stripes that have been cut out of daily newspapers. Their structure reminds of both grains of a cut tree and a film reel. The material used by the artist provokes associations with the passing of information, its mixing, the play of the media, and the unavoidable return of matter to its primal state.
