Work Creator notes (display):
French artist. Born in Paris, Laurens was apprenticed to an ornamental sculptor at an early age and studied academic drawing in the evenings. He settled in Montmartre in 1905. In 1911 he met Braque, and between 1914 and 1915 he produced the Constructions series, polychromed wood and plaster sculptures with an emphatic frontality, which investigated juxtapositions of volume. These works were shown in a series of solo shows at Leonice Rosenberg's gallery in Paris before 1920. He also produced papiers collés until 1918 and then polychromed stone and terracotta reliefs. His free-standing figures of the early 1920s show the influence of Matisse, which led to more naturalistic, curved forms. He met Maillol in 1925 and this undoubtedly consolidated his turn toward classicism, evident in Reclining Woman with Drapery (1927; Paris, Centre Georges Pompidou). In the early 1930s his work became more organic, the biomorphic forms gradually developing a Surrealist tone. (Grove Art Online accessed 2007-10-22)
