Work Creator notes (display):
German artist. Leader of Die Brücke from 1905 to 1913. Kirchner studied architecture in Dresden from 1901 and painting in Munich between 1903 and 1904. Returning to Dresden that year, he met Heckel and Schmidt-Rottluff and founded Die Brücke with them in 1905. Kirchner's early influences from the Western art tradition were the Neo-Impressionists, and later the Fauves. The pared-down quality of expression demonstrated most clearly in his woodcuts and graphic works was informed by Munch and late Gothic woodcuts. The greatest influence on his emerging Expressionist vocabulary was perhaps exerted, however, by the African and Oceanic art which he saw in the ethnological collections of Dresden and Berlin. Kirchner was able to harness these influences to his own artistic vision and produce some of the most significant works in the German Expressionist canon. Kirchner's work from the Dresden period focused chiefly on man in nature and images of studio life. He sought to distil his subject matter into what he termed 'primordial' signs; the bold, pared-down vocabulary of line and form evident in such works as Self-Portrait with Model (1910; Hamburg, Kunsthalle). In 1911, Kirchner moved to Berlin and his work showed an increasing shift away from the symbolic to the psychological, with images evoking the tensions and dynamism of modern life in the city dominating his œuvre with a vibrant coloration and freshness of mood. Kirchner volunteered when war broke out in 1914, but suffered a nervous breakdown and moved in 1917 to a sanatorium in Switzerland. His painting soon resumed with an energy reminiscent of his Brücke period, and he gradually moved towards a calmer, more abstract idiom (influenced from the mid-1920s by Cubism) of landscapes and studies of peasant life in Switzerland, where he was to live until his suicide in 1938.
