Work Creator notes (display):
English painter. According to his friend George Vertue, he was trained by William Faithorne and by Dirk Freres (164393), a Dutch history and decorative painter. Stylistically, he appears to have been strongly influenced by Michael Dahl. He was in independent practice by 1694. Several of his portraits were engraved. He painted some formal episcopal portraits, including Philip Bisse, Bishop of Hereford (Oxford, New Coll.; engraved by Vertue 1719); George Hooper, Bishop of Bath and Wells, signed and dated 1723 (Wells Cathedral); and William Wake, Archbishop of Canterbury (?c. 1730; London, N.P.G.) Hill was patronized by two generations of the Strangways family at Melbury House, Dorset, where he was 'received perfectly friendly … as one of the family'. In about 1698 he painted a vast mural above the staircase there, portraying the entire family, and also executed individual portraits, such as the signed Susanna Strangways (all Melbury, Dorset, Lady Teresa Agnew priv. col.). He was associated with the circle of Robert Harley, 1st Earl of Oxford, and became a close friend of his great librarian Humfrey Wanley, whom he painted several times between 1711 and 1722 (e.g. Oxford, Bodleian Lib.; London, N.P.G.). He probably retired in about 1725, when his collections were sold. A gentleman and an intellectual, Hill was a refreshing painter, displaying a refinement and sensibility absent from the work of most contemporary rivals in England.
