Work Creator notes (display):
German painter, born in east Prussia. Corinth studied art in Königsberg before enrolling at the Munich Academy in 1880. His early paintings are naturalistic in style, showing the influence of Hals and Rubens. In 1884, however, he moved to Antwerp, and from there to Paris, where he worked at the Académie Julian 18857, and frequented symbolist circles. He settled in Munich in 1891, and was a founder member of the Sezession, exhibiting pictures in which Symbolist and Impressionist influences are clearly visible. In 1901 he moved to Berlin, and opened a school which provided a vital introduction to modernism for many young painters. Crippled by a stroke in 1911, Corinth's style changed substantially as he fought his way back to paintingit became far more violent and expressionistic; cruder in colours and in line, but powerfully emotive, often concerned with religious themes, as in Ecce Homo (1925; Munich, Neue Pin.), or with landscape under extreme conditions of light and weather. He became chairman, and later president, of the Berlin Sezession (formed in 1899). There is a Corinth Museum at his birthplace in Tapiau. (Grove Art Online accessed 2007-10-17)
