Work Creator notes (display):
Swiss artist, architect, designer, writer, and teacher. He studied silversmithing in Zurich (19247), and architecture at the Bauhaus (19279) where Kandinsky, Klee, and Schlemmer were formative influences, as were van Doesburg's Constructivism and theory of Concrete art. Bill used mathematics and geometry to create an impersonal art, spiritually accessible to everyone. His paintings of geometric colour progressions within mathematical grids rely for effect on the interaction of colour and form: Condensation towards Yellow (1965; Belfast, Ulster Mus.). His stone or polished brass or copper sculptures are similarly dependent, one of the best known Endless Loop (19479; New York, Hirshorn Coll.), being based on the curious Möbius strip. A member of Abstraction-Création, he organized the first exhibition of Concrete art (1944, Basle), and, through his writings, was influential in Italy, Germany, and South America. Bill was rector of the Ulm Hochschule für Gestaltung (19515) which, built to his design, stands as his most ambitious architectural project. His writings include essays on Kandinsky and 'Die Mathematische' (Werk, 3, 1949), which advanced a mathematical approach in contemporary art. (Grove Art Online accessed 2007-10-17)
