Emanuel Martinez (American, born 1947)
Work Creator notes (display):
Born in Denver, Colorado in 1947, Emanuel Martinez began his career as an artist at the age of thirteen, when he painted his first mural. His art education includes workshops with world renowned artists and sculptors including David A. Siquieros and Francisco Zuniga. At the age of 20, Emanuel did a major work and two other pieces that are now in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American Art in Washington, D.C. As a muralist, painter and sculptor he occupies an outstanding status among nationally known artists. Since establishing a studio in 1968, Martinez has received international acclaim and prestigious awards for his design capabilities and high standards of workmanship. He enjoys personalizing compositions for clients and doing public works of art for site-specific environments. His work is lively, timeless, yet conveys a sense of serenity. He has been featured in over 300 newspaper/magazine articles and 37 published books, including a book written on his art career entitled: “Emanuel Martinez: A Retrospective”. http://emanuelmarti
Work Creator (display):
Ed Dwight (American, born 1933)
Work Creator notes (display):
Edward Joseph (Ed) Dwight, Jr. is an African American sculptor and former test pilot for the United States Air Force. He was also the first African American to enter the Air Force training program from which NASA selected astronauts. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1953 and eventually earned the rank of captain. Dwight received a BS in aeronautical engineering from Arizona State University in 1957. In 1961, he was invited to join the Aerospace Research Pilot School (ARPS) at Edwards Air Force Base, placing Dwight on a career track that could have sent him into outer space. His selection garnered international media attention. His selection was a symbolic gesture on behalf of the Kennedy administration to recognize marginalized groups. Dwight proceeded to Phase II of ARPS but was not selected by NASA to be an astronaut. As a result of "racial politics" and a lack of career opportunities, he resigned from the Air Force in 1966.
After resigning from the Air Force, Dwight moved to Denver and earned an MFA in sculpture from the University of Denver in 1977. Each of Dwight's pieces involves African Americans and civil rights activists. He is recognized for innovative use of negative space in sculpting. Dwight's first major work was a commission in 1974 to create a sculpture of Colorado Lieutenant Governor George L. Brown. Soon after, he was commissioned by the Colorado Centennial Commission to create a series of bronze sculptures entreated "Black Frontier in the American West." https://en.wikipedi
