Image Description:
Slide dated July 1980. The Bhavachakra is a common motif painted at the entrances of monasteries and temples, acting as a didactic image to teach viewers about the effects of karma on subsequent rebirths. This particular composition is notable for the unusual delineation of the human realm (upper left) as well as for the origin of the 'black strip' of negative karmic actions that emerge in the human realm and continue downward in a backwards "J" shape around the central Three Poisons (represeneted as a rooster, a boar and a snake). Generally, the 'black strip' of negative karma occupies half of a concentric circle that fully encircles the Three Poisons, with a corollary 'white strip' showing people moving up the 'karmic ladder' on the other side. This depiction at Thikse is comparatively unusual and less commonly seen. Also of note is the comparatively sparse treatment of the Twelve Links of Causation (aka Twelve Links of Dependent Origination); generally these have more detailed treatment and settings, although here they are simply inscribed figures without any delineation between themes.
