Since the early 1970's, Bill and Mary Buchen have collaborated to integrate the sound and visual arts into a multi-disciplinary field they define as "Sonic Architecture." In this pursuit, they have studied visual and acoustic phenomena as it applies to fields as varied as science, ecology, world cultures, and architecture. Their installations utilize a variety of electronictechnologies and field recordings. In a 1992 commission for Public School 23 in New York City titled Sound Playground, Bill and Mary Buchen designed an interactive installation or playspace where children can both landscape design as well as interactive sound sculptures where children create percussive rhythms. In one part of this playground, "Bronze Drum Table and Seats", resonant drums function both as musical instruments and as seats and table for children to use. Bill and Mary Buchen are recipients of numerous fellowships including a 1994 New York Foundation for the Arts grand and a 1991 India Travel Grant from the Indo-American Fellowship. Bill and Mary Buchen have received numerous National Endowment for the Arts awards including three project grants from 1991-93 as well as a fellowship in 1985. They have completed over 15 commissions and site installations across the United States and abroad. (Department of Fine Arts, University of Colorado at Boulder.
