Work Description:
Artist statement: Through photography, printmaking, and drawing I portray landscape features along ecologically diverse and sensitive river channels around the world. In them, I investigate the way water shapes landscape as well as how texture, tone, color, and form compose the visual vocabulary of landscape. The drawn lines and prints overlaying the photographs indicate secondary investigations of the space. // In combining photography with hand-produced line, these images question modes of representation and how they correlate to the experience of perception and gradual discovery of place. Contrasting the perceived realism of photography with the subjectivity of drawing, these pieces explore how experiencing, observing, and then reimagining a place creates new experiences of it, furthering relationship to place. // This work tells the stories of rivers by bearing witness to the way they affect the landscape. It brings to light how central rivers are to the geography that surrounds us as well as how rivers themselves change over time. It probes on a basic level into the experience of being human, feelings of wonder at the world around us, artistic response to times of environmental degradation, and how ourselves and the places we interact with simultaneously form and inform each other.
