Work Description:
Artist statement: My work examines the tensions, the contradictions, the rarities, and the tenderness that exists between humans and the environments we share with animals. It focuses on many aspects within, such as the connections we forge, the losses we feel, and the memories we carry with us. It can take the form of an intimate understanding of an animal we lived with and grew with, as well as the passing recognition of those creatures we will never be close to - bared by their wildness. Even still, each piece grasps at a greater understanding of these relationships and the way they shape our perceptions and our interactions with those of us not human. This trail I have been following within my work was borne from a childhood spent exploring nature. I was taught to look closely and listen carefully, and that if I did so, a secret world would reveal itself. I learned that patience was rewarded, and that calmness bred reciprocation from those who dwelled around me. The work itself spans material, from paper and clay to thread and metal. Process drives the actualization of each piece, and material makes it concrete. I see each act of making as a small performance, one that is only visible to myself as I embody mourner, memory keeper, and story teller, weaving narrative into various forms of sculpture, collage, and drawing. There is always a lean toward intimacy, the personal knowledge of a specific life lived. These works, at their core, are reliquaries, a means of remembering what is important and an act of devotion within their making. With a background in Classical Studies, I use my knowledge of mythology and religion to assist the conceptual nature of the work as well, pulling in mythical figures and embodying acts of worship through the making process. The results evoke ethereal spaces, the glimmer of memory, and the dreamlike world that tugs at our waking moments.
