Work Description:
Artist statement: Through the production of objects and images, I seek to translate sensory experiences from ‘real’ space to ‘virtual’ space. In my early 20s, I trained as a potter. This practice made me hyper-sensitive to the tactile sensations specific to handling clay. I’ll often notice myself staring mindlessly at my email inbox, or scrolling through an endless feed of photos on the internet; totally numb to the outside world. When stuck in the bleakness of cyberspace, I’ve found that the sensation of squeezing clay between my fingers, or clicking two ceramic objects together will bring me back into my body, into ‘real’ space. My thesis work suggests that tactile experiences can be captured in virtual space. In drawings and video, I produce echoes of the real— visual and auditory experiences that narrate the action of a specific time and place.
