Work Description:
Thesis abstract: I am utterly fascinated by hair, mine and other people's; it is sumptuous and colorful, decorative and dangling. This fascination stems from the fact that everyone has had a hair experience. Stories like bad hair cuts, the ritualistic cutting of hair at the end of a love relationship, or being mistaken for the opposite sex are common. A theme which surfaces time and time again is the idea of control. When our lives are unmanageable we seek to control our hair, perhaps similarly to how anorexics control their intake of food. We shave, pluck, perm, color, spray, and blow in an attempt to make it look just right. But over time, unless tended to, it will return to its natural state. // I am addressing the connotations and contradictions which surround hair in our everyday existence. Artists throughout history who have depicted the nude have omitted body hair or have discretely covered it with a well placed hand or drapery. Similarly today, women in advertisements who are considered desirable are consistently represented as hairless and smooth.
