Work Description:
Thesis abstract: My ceramic sculpture is based on my personal experience as a woman, daughter and artist. The handbuilt forms I create embody metaphorical images relating to the uniqueness of women. I explore figurative abstraction as a vehicle to express these ideas. Metaphor is used to enhance the issues that my artwork confronts. My thesis show is titled "If I am born again, I want to be a bird". My thesis exhibition contains ten sculptures. // My observation about the life of women is based on my cultural background. I was born and raised in Korea where women are expected to serve the needs of the immediate and extended family, instead of pursuing their own needs for self fulfillment. Most Korean women accept their given responsibilities as their fate. After women get married, the focus of their lives is on their role as wife and mother. I looked at my Korean lifestyle and the limitations and restrictions I had faced in order to become a female artist in Korea. I have struggled to create a balance between my gender role in my native culture and my desire to become an artist. I believe that the strength of women that allows them to accept their hardship of life comes from patience. By overcoming hardship and not giving up obligation, women contribute to making a better life for their families as well as that of others. I have learned this lesson from observing and thinking about my mother's life and its relationship to women's lives in general. // Influences on my art come from my years of training in Korea, but also from the world of Western art. I was looking for a direction, a personal voice and growth in my art when I came to America. I wanted to stand on my own, without the heavy influences of my Korean training. There, I did not have the confidence to express myself. I am influenced and like the simplicity of the sculpture of Henry Moore , Brancusi and Giacometti and the narrow forms of Stephen deStaebler's figures. While I was working on my sculptures in this program I made a trip to New York to look at art there. It changed the way I constructed my forms. A visit to Arnold Zimmerman's studio gave me new ideas about the way my sculptures rested on the ground. I had made the bases solid forms and from his work I got the idea to make the sculptures have a narrower base, resting on the ground in several places, instead of just one. It gave my work a lighter feeling. I feel that my work is very contemporary in style and the issues it confronts are global.
