Work Description:
Artist statement: A primary focus of my artwork is to recreate landscape, through the interaction with and remembrance of “place.” The notion of place encompasses the larger context of my work and my experience and memory of different geographical locations within the umbrella of place are the inspiration for many of my projects. In the process of recreating “landscape” within the white cube, I utilize various earthy materials that suggest metaphorical meaning related to the original place. / In my project, Remembrance of Place, 2013, I was inspired by my experience of the frozen body of water of Barker Reservoir, Nederland, CO. The unusual texture and shimmering reflections of light on the frozen water left a lasting impression in my memory. For this project I combined transparent greenish-colored plexiglass with rock salt and water. Salt is an earthy material that possesses a metaphorical meaning of water and earth. The salt and water naturally create a landscape on the surface of the plexiglass. As the water evaporates, the salt crystals and remnants leave a trace, which can be imagined as a geographical map, pattern, territory, or ocean surface. Just as the water evaporates and leaves traces of salt patterns upon the transparent plexiglass, so does the memory of my experience of the frozen reservoir fade over time and leave traces in my mind. / The image of the undulating surface of Barker Reservoir, Nederland, CO fall 2012), remains indelibly engraved in my memory and conjures up other images of a similar place from where I originated. For the project, From Place to Place, 2013, I present four images of these two places. The first photo of the wavy surface of the reservoir is strikingly similar to the last photo of the ocean, surrounding Geo-je Island, South Korea. The memories of these places become entwined and inseparable in my mind. The reservoir image and experience fades away to become that of the Geo-je ocean and the Geo-je ocean fades into my experience of the reservoir.
