James Baca was born and raised in Denver by a single mother in the projects. He attended North High School and then served in the Air Force. Upon his return, he attended the Community College of Denver, where his photography career began. Baca started doing freelance photography for small papers at the time. In 1973, he joined the staff of La Voz. In 1980, he began to work with the Denver Catholic Register. Throughout his career, Baca has rubbed elbows with not only the Pope and Mother Teresa, but also with the activists and heroes of the Chicano Movement.
